TOP NEWS: Cambodia and Thailand Agree to Ceasefire After Malaysia-Mediated Talks

Kuala Lumpur, July 28, 2025 — In a significant development aimed at de-escalating ongoing hostilities, Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following diplomatic talks mediated by Malaysia. Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia announced the breakthrough via his official Facebook account, detailing the commitments made by both sides.

According to Prime Minister Hun Manet, the ceasefire is set to take effect from 24:00 hours on July 28. The agreement marks an important step toward reducing tensions and restoring peace along the disputed border. As part of the ongoing efforts, military commanders from both nations will meet at 7 a.m. on July 29 to confirm the ceasefire. If successful, further meetings involving defense attaches and military officials—led by Malaysia, this year's ASEAN chair—are planned.

Additionally, a Cambodian-Thai General Boundary Committee (GBC) meeting is scheduled for August 4 in Cambodia, providing a platform for ongoing dialogue and dispute resolution.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for facilitating and hosting the talks, as well as to U.S. President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for their support and active participation in the peace process.

The negotiations brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, with Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim mediating at his official residence in Putrajaya. Their discussions were attended by ambassadors from the United States and China, emphasizing the international interest in stabilizing the region.

Malaysia has also offered to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire through the deployment of an observer team, aiming to ensure compliance and confidence-building between the two nations.

This diplomatic breakthrough signifies a pivotal moment in the effort to restore peace and stability in the region, with both Cambodia and Thailand committed to taking concrete steps toward resolving their longstanding border disputes.
