Kuala Lumpur, July 28, 2025 — Diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand commenced on Monday in Malaysia, as the long-standing border conflict entered its fifth day of open hostilities.

The talks are taking place at the official residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, outside Kuala Lumpur. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are participating in the discussions, which are being mediated by Prime Minister Anwar. The ambassadors of the United States and China were also present at the meeting, according to a Malaysian official.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai departed for Kuala Lumpur earlier on Monday. Malaysia is the current ASEAN chair.

The border dispute, which has resulted in ongoing clashes, remains a significant security concern for the region. The Malaysian government is facilitating the negotiations in an effort to de-escalate the conflict and restore stability.
