Thailand Seeks Diplomatic Solutions Amid Escalating Border Clashes with Cambodia; Cambodia Condemns Airstrikes

Phnom Penh, July 25, 2025 — The Thai government is pushing for diplomatic talks to reduce ongoing border tensions with Cambodia, following escalating hostilities that have drawn international concern. Acting Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced Thailand’s commitment to dialogue, with efforts coordinated alongside ASEAN Chair, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Phumtham emphasized that ASEAN plans to engage initially with Cambodia’s leadership before progressing to broader discussions with Thailand, aiming to restore stability along the border.

As diplomatic efforts unfold, tensions have escalated further with reports of Thai F-16 jets targeting Cambodian sites. According to a report by France 24 English, an F-16 jet allegedly destroyed a military target within Cambodia. In contrast, Cambodian authorities have condemned the actions, stating that Thai jets dropped two bombs on a road, labeling the action as blatant aggression.

“This aggression constitutes a grave violation of international law,” Cambodia stated, denouncing the airstrikes as a threat to regional peace.

Recent Military Actions and Condemnations

Cambodia has condemned recent military operations by Thai forces, which resulted in damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cambodian officials described the attack as a breach of international treaties aimed at protecting cultural heritage in conflict zones.

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia accused Thai forces of “unprovoked and deliberate attacks” on several key positions, citing violations of the 1954 Hague Convention and the ASEAN Charter.

Details of the Incident

Early reports indicate that Thai forces launched coordinated assaults on Cambodian areas including Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, and Mom Bei. Thailand's government, defending its actions, claimed the military operations were necessary and targeted strategic sites.

Call for Restraint and Dialogue

In response, the Cambodian government called on Thailand to respect international law and cease hostilities immediately. The situation underscores the necessity of diplomacy to resolve the dispute. Both ASEAN and the international community continue to advocate for peaceful dialogue.
