Cambodia Seeks UNESCO Recognition for Traditional Khmer Wedding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has submitted a nomination dossier to UNESCO seeking recognition of the "Khmer Traditional Wedding," also known as "Khmer Marriage" or "Kar," for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

According to Mr. SUM Map, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the nomination was submitted on April 2, 2024, and the Ministry's technical working group is currently coordinating with the ICH Secretariat to complete all necessary steps. The registration process is proceeding in compliance with UNESCO's procedures.

"The objective of the Kingdom of Cambodia in nominating the 'Khmer Traditional Wedding, Khmer Marriage, or Kar' is to preserve and safeguard the traditional customs of the Khmer people, which date back to ancient times and remain widely and faithfully practiced by the population today,” stated Mr. Sum Map. “This effort also seeks to share with the world the rich cultural heritage and ancient civilization of Cambodia, particularly the unique traditions surrounding the Khmer wedding ceremony.”

The nomination process involved strong cooperation among government institutions, the private sector, and local communities, including the tradition's bearers and practitioners. The Ministry emphasizes that the nomination dossier and supporting documents fully comply with the guidelines outlined in the Operational Directives of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Khmer Traditional Wedding Ceremony encompasses a wide range of customs, including wedding rituals, traditional music and songs, ceremonial attire, and other culturally significant elements. These traditions are considered an essential part of married life for the Khmer people.

Final inscription and official recognition by UNESCO is anticipated by the end of 2026.
