Jakarta, Indonesia, May 5 — Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, paid a courtesy call and held working discussions with Mr. Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on May 5, 2025, during Hun Sen's working visit to Indonesia.
President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Senate President Hun Sen, recalling their previous meeting in Phnom Penh in September 2024. He acknowledged Samdech Techo Hun Sen's long-standing experience and statesmanship in Southeast Asian leadership. He also mentioned Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s planned address at the ASEAN and East Asia Economic Research Institute, highlighting Indonesia's commitment to promoting dialogue, national reconciliation, and peaceful conflict resolution in Cambodia since the 1980s and 1990s. President Prabowo stated that this commitment has been the foundation for strong Cambodia-Indonesia bilateral relations and economic cooperation within ASEAN.
During the meeting, Senate President Hun Sen expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and acknowledged a friendship with President Prabowo spanning over 30 years. Samdech Techo Hun Sen highlighted that Cambodia-Indonesia relations have been friendly for over 37 years since peace talks began and recognized Indonesia's assistance as integral to Cambodia's current achievements. Hun Sen emphasized the need for continued strengthening of cooperation, both bilaterally and within ASEAN.
President of the Senate of Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen congratulated President Prabowo on his recent election victory. He noted Indonesia's growing strength in food and energy security, while Cambodia, despite having food security, lacks energy security. He conveyed hope that both countries could further promote cooperation in economics, trade, tourism, and aviation.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also extended an invitation from the King of Cambodia for President Prabowo to visit Cambodia at his convenience. He noted that many Indonesian presidents have visited Cambodia in the past.
President Prabowo thanked His Majesty the King for the invitation and accepted, stating that he would visit Cambodia in the future. He also asked Hun Sen to relay his greetings to King Norodom Sihamoni. He added that in his six months as president, Indonesia has made significant strides in food security, with a focus on promoting investment in energy security.
President Prabowo expressed Indonesia's interest in signing a memorandum of understanding on fisheries with Cambodia and expressed readiness for cooperation between private companies in the fisheries and energy sectors. Regarding aviation, he noted that AirAsia Cambodia already operates flights to Bali, Indonesia, and that an Indonesian company is exploring flights to Siem Reap.
Both Senate President Hun Sen and President Prabowo expressed satisfaction with the strong military-to-military cooperation between the two countries, and both leaders committed to further expansion. They also discussed cooperation in addressing cross-border crime, online fraud, and drug trafficking.
