Rong Chhun Convicted and Stripped of Political Rights by Phnom Penh Court

Phnom Penh, May 5 — The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has convicted Mr. Rong Chhun, advisor to the Cambodia National Unity Party, of inciting serious disorder related to social security and disorderly conduct, and has handed down a sentence that includes the loss of his political rights.

According to reports from LICADHO, a human rights organization, the court conducted a hearing on Mr. Rong Chhun this morning. The proceedings followed his earlier conviction on misdemeanor charges, which led to a sentencing of four years in prison. Additionally, the court permanently revoked his right to vote and stand for election.

The court also imposed a fine of 4 million riel (approximately $975 USD) on Mr. Rong Chhun. The charges stem from statements he made publicly, which the court found to be false, concerning online fraud allegations in Cambodia and disputes related to the Cambodia-Vietnam border.
