Prime Minister Hun Manet Commemorates International Workers’ Day at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port

Sihanoukville, Cambodia – On May 1, 2025, Prime Minister Hun Manet held a significant gathering with civil servants and workers at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port to mark International Workers’ Day. This annual event acknowledges Cambodia's ongoing commitment to enhancing labor rights and conditions since the end of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.

Minister of Public Works and Transport, Peng Purna, emphasized the importance of the government's commitment to upholding labor laws and fostering harmonious professional relationships. He highlighted efforts to implement policies that provide a range of benefits for workers, including regular negotiations for minimum wage increases and improved compensations.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet reinforced the significance of maintaining peace in Cambodia as a cornerstone for development. He stated that a stable environment promotes investment across various sectors, leading to job creation and improved living standards for citizens.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Manet expressed appreciation for the civil servants, staff, and workers of the Preah Sihanouk Autonomous Port, acknowledging their hard work and collaboration in reinforcing compliance with national and international labor laws. He noted that the port's operational successes contribute significantly to the national economy.

Prime Minister Manet also announced plans to inaugurate the 200th factory in an economic zone in Sihanoukville Province, showcasing his government's focus on industrial growth. He remarked on the continued attention to labor laws, stating that since 1979, the Royal Government has prioritized workers' rights, contrasting the neglect during the Khmer Rouge era when International Labor Day was not recognized.

The Prime Minister outlined the development of a new deep-water container terminal at the port, which is set to enhance capacity and facilitate direct shipping routes, a project supported by Japan at an estimated cost of $700 million. He expressed gratitude towards Japan for its partnership in the port's development and reassured stakeholders of Cambodia's stability as a trading partner.

In further remarks, he addressed the complexities of international trade negotiations, particularly with the United States, reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining open trade channels while protecting national interests. He urged Cambodians to unite in safeguarding the nation's peace and prosperity.

The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing the country's vision of becoming a high-income nation by 2050, declaring that the path to this goal requires collective effort and a commitment to protecting the peace and unity of the nation.

This celebration of International Workers’ Day served as a vital reminder of the ongoing efforts and challenges in labor rights within Cambodia, reflecting the government's dedication to fostering a supportive environment for workers and economic growth.
