Prime Minister Hun Manet: Cambodia is taking small steps, but we are always moving forward in building a robust automotive industry

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Reflecting on the evolving landscape of Cambodia's automotive sector, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized, "Cambodia is taking small steps, but we are always moving forward in building a robust automotive industry." His remarks came during a recent ceremony celebrating the expansion of RMA CAMBODIA, part of RMA Group, which has significantly contributed to the nation's growth in this sector.

Established in 1992, RMA CAMBODIA has become a key supplier across various industries, including automotive, agriculture, and infrastructure. The company employs over 4,000 individuals, of whom 1,178 are women and 2,303 are technical staff.

During the ceremony, RMA Group President Kevin Whitcraft outlined the company’s journey, noting an initial investment of $21 million for a car assembly plant covering 5 hectares. Following its inauguration in 2022, total investment rose to $26.8 million, with the plant’s area expanded to 12 hectares. This growth has allowed a transition from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly to IKD-1 (Improved Knocked Down) assembly, boosting annual production capacity to over 10,000 vehicles. To date, RMA CAMBODIA has assembled 7,492 vehicles.

Prime Minister Manet praised RMA Group's efforts and the expansion of Ford Motor Company's production line in Krakor district, Pursat province, describing it as a significant achievement that creates job opportunities, raises salaries, and facilitates technology transfer in local production.

“RMA Group has played a vital role in the advancement of Cambodia’s automotive sector,” Manet stated. He expressed pride in the partnership with RMA and Ford, underscoring their commitment to investing in Cambodia’s potential market. The Prime Minister also reflected on his past coordination with Whitcraft to facilitate the establishment of the assembly plant and acknowledged the necessary support from the government.

Highlighting the sector’s growth, Manet noted that the Ford assembly plant has increased its workforce from 160 to 404 employees over three years, with wages rising from just over $200 to between $320 and $800. This trend illustrates a positive trajectory in Cambodia’s labor market.

The Prime Minister pointed out the transformation of the nation’s economy since the 1990s, transitioning from reliance on imports to local production. He celebrated the recognition of Ford’s engines as “made in Cambodia,” highlighting the significance of fair trade and foreign investments.

With nine operational car assembly plants, Prime Minister Manet encouraged local manufacturers to focus on producing more components within Cambodia, reinforcing the Royal Government's commitment to fostering a favorable investment environment.

Looking to the future, the Prime Minister called for continued infrastructure development in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces, emphasizing the importance of building a railway connecting special economic zones to improve transportation. He reiterated the Royal Government's dedication to maintaining a stable environment for business growth.

Additionally, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Mines and Energy to enhance electric vehicle infrastructure while ensuring safety and compliance with Clean Energy standards for electricity distribution.

Through this strategic expansion, RMA Group not only strengthens Cambodia's automotive industry but also aligns with the Royal Government's vision for economic development through local production and international collaboration.
