Prime Minister Hun Manet Expresses Displeasure Over Criticism of Chinese Investments During Kampot International Tourist Port Inauguration

Kampot, Cambodia – April 21, 2025– Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his discontent regarding negative perspectives on China, highlighting that many critics benefit from investments made by Chinese companies. His remarks came during the official inauguration ceremony of the Kampot International Tourist Port.

In his speech, Prime Minister Hun Manet pointed out the contradictions in the criticisms directed toward Chinese investments. “Some people ride on highways built with Chinese loans but curse China, while others work in factories owned by Chinese firms, earning substantial salaries,” he remarked. “I find it perplexing that these individuals criticize our government for encouraging investments from China.”

These comments followed a recent state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which sparked discontent among certain factions in Cambodia. Some extremists have openly criticized the Cambodian government in the wake of this visit.

Hun Manet urged Cambodians to take pride in their country’s ability to maintain equal relationships with major global powers, stating, “Cambodia stands among only three countries—along with Vietnam and Malaysia—to host such visits from a world leader.” He affirmed that Cambodia's relationship with China remains strong, emphasizing that the government maintains a policy of inclusivity in its foreign relations, refusing to prioritize any one nation over another.

“Cambodia does not choose sides; we engage with all countries,” he declared. “Our political stance is grounded in the principles of independence, sovereignty, and mutual respect.” The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the People’s Republic of China is an essential partner, significantly contributing to Cambodia’s economic and social development.

To date, China has invested over $3 billion in improving Cambodia’s road and bridge infrastructure. Hun Manet expressed gratitude on behalf of the Cambodian government and people for this support, reinforcing the enduring friendship between the two nations.

In a light-hearted analogy, the Prime Minister addressed recent comments comparing U.S. and Chinese investments to culinary choices: “I wonder why people don’t appreciate cabbage? Some say beef represents America and cabbage represents China. Both have merits; cabbage is a healthy vegetable that can sustain life, while beef is delicious but may not be as beneficial in excess.”

Hun Manet stressed that Cambodians are free to choose both economic partners, reflecting on the interdependence of both choices. “There is no cow without cabbage,” he noted, underscoring the importance of both sectors in strengthening the nation and securing a prosperous future for its people.

As the Prime Minister concluded, he reaffirmed the Cambodian People’s Party's commitment to independence and self-determination, stating, “We take all necessary steps to empower our nation and improve the livelihoods of our citizens.”
