Chinese President Xi Jinping Affirms Cambodia's Role as a Key Partner in China’s Diplomatic Strategy

Phnom Penh, April 17, 2025 – Chinese President Xi Jinping today arrived in Cambodia for an official two-day visit, underscoring the vital role Cambodia plays in China’s foreign policy. He expressed his unwavering support for Cambodia as it seeks to uphold its strategic autonomy and pursue sustainable development.

In a statement made prior to his arrival, President Xi highlighted the enduring bilateral relationship between China and Cambodia. He noted that this partnership, cultivated by generations of leaders from both nations, continues to thrive despite shifting global dynamics. “Our ties remain rock-solid,” he stated.

“China and Cambodia took the lead in building a community with a shared future at the bilateral level and in carrying out Belt and Road cooperation,” he emphasized. “Our two countries have supported each other in maintaining national stability and promoting development and prosperity, and have worked side by side to stand up for fairness and justice in international affairs.”

President Xi added that Cambodia and China have established a model of fostering a new type of international relationship, which contributes to a shared future for mankind. He characterized Cambodia as a “priority in China’s neighborhood diplomacy,” affirming, “China will steadfastly support Cambodia’s efforts to preserve its strategic autonomy and pursue a development path that aligns with its national conditions.”

Looking ahead, President Xi expressed anticipation for meetings with King Norodom Sihamoni, Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, Senate President Hun Sen, and Prime Minister Hun Manet. He aims to strengthen the friendship between the two nations and chart a path for future collaboration.

“We will enhance China-Cambodia Diamond Hexagon cooperation, elevate mutual political trust, and promote high-quality, mutually beneficial partnerships,” he declared. “Our efforts will ensure greater security, foster cultural exchanges, and strengthen strategic coordination, ultimately benefiting our peoples and contributing positively to peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

Throughout his visit, President Xi will pay respects at the Royal Palace and engage in discussions with Cambodian leaders on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional and international matters of shared concern.

The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regards this visit as an important milestone that will reinforce the longstanding friendship established by the leaders of both countries, further solidifying the profound and comprehensive strategic partnership between Cambodia and China.
