At Least 30 Dead and Many Injured in Stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela in India

Prayagraj, India — At least 30 people were killed and dozens more injured in a stampede early Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest Hindu festivals, as millions of pilgrims rushed to bathe in the holy waters of the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers.

Witnesses reported that chaos erupted as pilgrims gathered at the confluence of the two rivers, a site considered sacred in Hinduism. Safety barricades failed, and fences were toppled, leading to a massive surge of people. Many individuals who were lying or sitting on the riverbanks were caught in the crush as others attempted to flee after bathing.

Journalists from The New York Times observed distressing scenes, with emergency personnel carrying victims on stretchers and assisting those in need of medical attention. The official toll of casualties was released more than half a day after the incident occurred, which took place between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. local time.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Wednesday evening that a judicial inquiry would be launched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and to determine how such a tragic event occurred despite heavy precautions.

Authorities are working to assess the situation and provide aid to the injured, as the festival continues to draw millions of devotees.
