Cambodia Celebrates 46th Anniversary of Victory Day on January 7

On January 7, 2025, over 20,000 members and leaders of the Cambodian People's Party, including Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President; Samdech Heng Samrin, Honorary President; and Samdech Hun Manet, Vice President, gathered to commemorate the 46th anniversary of Victory Day, marking the end of the Pol Pot genocidal regime. This day is significant for Cambodians as it represents their liberation through the dedication of the elite of the Cambodian People's Party and the efforts of soldiers and women.

In his address, Samdech Techo Hun Sen emphasized that the People's Party symbolizes change, representing a transformation from hardship to ease. He acknowledged concerns about Cambodia's situation since his departure from office but stated that the new Royal Government has exceeded expectations in its achievements over the past 16 months. He asserted that the successors’ leadership is proving to be more effective than that of the previous generation.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen suggested a reevaluation of the phrase “young people are strong, old people know the way,” proposing instead that it should be “young people are strong, know the way, and old people have experience.” He expressed concerns that some older individuals misguide the youth, referencing the events of March 18, 1970, as an example.

He urged for the establishment of a law to classify individuals or groups attempting to form anti-government movements or incite chaos as terrorists. This statement followed the recent announcements from anti-extremist groups declaring the establishment of a government abroad and promoting symbols aimed at overthrowing the legitimate government.

During his speech, Samdech Techo Hun Sen highlighted that while Cambodia has enjoyed 26 years of peace, it remains vulnerable to extremist sentiments. He stressed that without peace, discussions of human rights, democracy, and development are futile.

Further, he reaffirmed the enduring significance of January 7, noting it reflects the resilience and unity of the Cambodian people. He articulated a commitment to protect this hard-won peace and urged all Cambodians to uphold their love for peace.

On the historical context, he emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes, specifically referencing the support of the 1970 coup and the UN's recognition of the genocidal regime from 1979 to 1991. He called for respect for Cambodia's national sovereignty and self-determination.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen concluded by underscoring the successes of the current leadership under Prime Minister Hun Manet, asserting that progress has surpassed expectations and that the new generation of leaders is effectively guiding Cambodia towards a brighter future.
