Deputy Prime Minister Koeut Rith Urges Ethical Journalism: 'After the Rain, the Sky is Clear'
Phnom Penh: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Mr. Koeut Rith, delivered a strong message on Tuesday afternoon, calling for all journalists to strictly adhere to professional ethics in their reporting. He stressed the importance of consulting the spokespersons of prosecution and judicial institutions when comprehensive information is not readily available, cautioning that misinformation can lead to public confusion and distrust.
This appeal comes on the heels of a noteworthy incident involving journalist Phat Horn, known publicly as Pu Horn, who recently acknowledged his reporting mistakes. Horn faced scrutiny for using discrediting language towards judicial institutions and disseminating false information that significantly impacted the reputation of the Kampong Cham provincial judiciary.
In a letter received by Deputy Prime Minister Rith today, Horn expressed his profound regret for his actions. The dialogue initiated by Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra between Mr. Rith and leaders of the justice sector allowed for an amicable resolution to the matter, resulting in the withdrawal of the complaint against Horn and paving the way for improved cooperation between journalism and the judiciary.
“I would like to thank the President of Kampong Cham Provincial Court for his understanding in agreeing to withdraw his complaint,” Deputy Prime Minister Rith expressed, emphasizing the collaborative spirit essential for fostering trust.
Referring to the phrase, “After the rain, the sky is clear,” Mr. Rith metaphorically illustrated the importance of transparency and mutual respect in the relationship between journalists and the justice sector. He reiterated that adhering to the code of professional ethics is not only a requirement but also serves as a crucial legal safeguard for journalists.
Moreover, Deputy Prime Minister Rith called on the spokespersons from the prosecution and courts to ensure they provide necessary information while respecting the confidentiality of court proceedings and the private lives of those involved—an obligation under the current laws of Cambodia.
As the media continues to evolve, Mr. Rith’s insights reflect the importance of ethical journalism in maintaining the integrity of public discourse and the justice system.
