Containers at Sihanoukville Port Reach Record 1 Million TEUs

Preah Sihanouk Province, December 21, 2024: The number of containers passing through the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port has reached a record high of 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), reflecting a remarkable increase of over 29%.

During a ceremony celebrating this significant achievement, Mr. Mang Sinet, Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, highlighted the milestone, which took place with the participation of Mr. ABE Yoshihiro, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

At the event, Ms. MIURA Yoshiko, Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency in Cambodia, along with local officials including the Deputy Governor and the Mayor, expressed their gratitude to Samdech Techo, President of the Senate of Cambodia, for his ongoing support for the port community. They noted that his leadership has greatly contributed to the long-standing peace that Cambodia enjoys today—25 years, which has facilitated national economic development and the prosperity of its people.

"From 2019 onward, our national economic growth rate has accelerated from an average of 18 percent to a staggering 29 percent in 2024," declared Governor Mang Sinet. "This year marks a historic achievement for the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, culminating in the handling of 1 million containers."

The governor attributed this success to the strategic direction of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and the strong collaboration with the Japanese government, which has facilitated crucial support for port services development. This partnership continues to enhance the progress of national economic growth.

In his remarks, Governor Mang Sinet commended the dedication of the port's Board of Directors, staff, and workers, who have shown relentless commitment to improving port services and infrastructure. Their efforts have resulted in consistent business growth and positive outcomes for the community.

Under the cooperation framework between Cambodia and Japan, Sihanoukville has benefited from numerous developmental projects across various sectors, including health, education, and infrastructure. Significant investments have been made into the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, leading to improvements such as the construction of a special economic zone and the provision of modern lifting equipment.

Looking ahead, the Royal Government of Cambodia has outlined a vision for 2038 in its Preah Sihanouk Provincial Land Management Plan, aiming to establish the province as a sustainable national development hub along the coast, fostering economic growth, trade, and tourism in a vibrant and modern environment.

This achievement not only demonstrates the port's significant role in Cambodia's economic landscape but also symbolizes the harmony and progress the Cambodian people have achieved, thanks to a lasting peace.
