PM Hun Manet: Media’s Role Central to Cambodia’s Achievements

PHNOM PENH, October 18, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet has credited Cambodia’s significant achievements to the active and vital contributions of media institutions and journalists.

In a congratulatory message delivered at the 21st Cambodian Press Editors’ Forum, the Prime Minister highlighted the indispensable partnership between the Royal Government and the media in driving progress. “The active participation of journalists is a crucial partnership that supports the Royal Government’s mission,” he stated.

Hun Manet affirmed the government’s commitment to upholding freedom of the press and expression in line with Cambodia’s Constitution and Press Law. He emphasized the importance of a responsible, professional press that upholds the truth, critiques constructively, and reflects the realities of society, while avoiding the spread of misinformation or one-sided narratives.

“We need the media’s contributions to combat corruption, reform the legal and social justice systems, promote democracy, respect human rights, and build a just, peaceful, and developed society,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Hun Manet also acknowledged the Cambodian Press Editors’ Forum for addressing the theme “Journalism and Expression,” noting the ongoing challenges in adhering to professional ethics, particularly among online journalists. He called for collective efforts to enhance training programs and professional standards to strengthen public trust in the media.

While praising journalists for their efforts in supporting government policies, he urged the media to use their platform responsibly and within legal boundaries, cautioning against misuse that could disrupt social order and harm citizens.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to journalists and media institutions for their dedication to promoting peace and sustainable development, aligning with Cambodia’s long-term vision, "Cambodia Vision 2050."

Hun Manet concluded with high hopes for the outcomes of the 21st Cambodian Journalists’ Forum, expressing his wish for fruitful discussions that would further enhance the nation’s media landscape and elevate the profession to new heights.
