The 10th Japanese Film Festival Kicks Off in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, 09 December, 2024 — The Japan Foundation, Phnom Penh Liaison Office, in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC), proudly launched the 10th Japanese Film Festival in Cambodia. Sponsored by AEON MALL (Cambodia) Co., Ltd., AEON MALL (CAMBODIA) LOGI PLUS CO., LTD., J Trust Royal Bank Plc., and Branch of Panasonic Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., the event promises an enriching cultural experience for Cambodian audiences.

The festival, which runs across multiple weekends, will feature 14 Japanese films from various genres, including drama, fantasy, mystery, animation, comedy, and classic cinema. These films, some of which are award-winning, offer a unique perspective on Japanese life, culture, and society, providing a valuable opportunity for Cambodian viewers to deepen their understanding of Japan and its people.

Over the years, the Japanese Film Festival has grown into a vital platform for cultural exchange between Japan and Cambodia. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ek Buntha, Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, emphasized the festival's impact, stating:

"Over the past decade, the Japanese Film Festival in Cambodia has served as a bridge between our cultures, offering glimpses into the heart of Japan through the art of cinema, thanks to your continued support and enthusiasm."

Ek Buntha also highlighted the festival’s role in inspiring young Cambodians, adding:

"I sincerely hope that this year’s festival will inspire, entertain, and provide you with new insights into Japanese culture and society, and, most importantly, feel Japan becoming even closer to your hearts."

Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi expressed his aspirations for the festival, saying:

"We hope that, as a result of watching films of many genres, Cambodian people will experience Japan’s social and cultural diversity and become more interested in Japan."

He added:

"I wish for the further development of the friendship between Japan and Cambodia and for the good health and happiness of everyone present here today."

Mr. Isogaya Hiroyuki, Director of the Japan Foundation Phnom Penh Liaison Office, echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the festival's decade-long journey:

"Over the past decade, the Japanese Film Festival in Cambodia has served as a bridge between our cultures, offering glimpses into the heart of Japan through the art of cinema."

He concluded:

"I sincerely hope that this year’s festival will inspire, entertain, and provide you with new insights into Japanese culture and society, and, most importantly, feel Japan becoming even closer to your hearts."

The Japanese Film Festival has been held annually in Cambodia since 2015, fostering meaningful exchanges between Japanese and Cambodian filmmakers. This year’s festival also included workshops and networking events, further solidifying ties between the two nations.

December 7–8, 2024: Major Cineplex by Smart at AEON MALL Phnom Penh (AEON 1)
