Cambodia and Malaysia Explore Opportunities for Enhanced Cooperation

Phnom Penh: On the morning of December 7, 2024, Dr. Tan Sri Abang Zohari Tun Openg, Chief Executive of Sarawak, Malaysia, and President of the Islamic Promotion Council for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), visited the Peace Palace for a courtesy call and discussions with Cambodian leaders.

During the meeting, the Chief Executive of Sarawak expressed his profound gratitude to the Royal Government of Cambodia for its support in hosting the 20th RISEAP conference in Phnom Penh, marking the first time Cambodia has held this significant event. He provided insight into RISEAP's history, which was founded in 1980 under the leadership of Malaysia's inaugural Prime Minister. The organization aims to foster understanding and respect between different religions, contributing to a peaceful and harmonious society.

Dr. Tan Sri Abang Zohari emphasized Cambodia's vast potential and opportunities for further strengthening and expanding cooperation with Malaysia. He highlighted Sarawak's role in enhancing bilateral relations and fostering connections between the peoples of both nations.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his appreciation for RISEAP's decision to hold its 20th conference in the country, viewing it as a significant opportunity to showcase Cambodia as a land of peace and security. He noted that the prevailing stability in Cambodia fosters an environment conducive to building religious harmony. The Prime Minister assured that the Royal Government is committed to upholding religious freedoms and values, recognizing the contributions of all religious communities, including the Islamic community, in promoting harmony.

The discussions also encompassed strategies for further promoting and expanding cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia, particularly between Cambodia and Sarawak. Key areas of focus included education, tourism, renewable energy, and the potential introduction of direct flights from Sarawak to Cambodia, along with enhancing people-to-people connections.
