Phnom Penh: Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, announced the inclusion of the Khmer krama in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as designated by UNESCO. This prestigious acknowledgment was bestowed during a session in Asunción, Republic of Paraguay, on December 4, 2024.
On behalf of the Cambodian People's Party and the Senate, Hun Sen expressed heartfelt congratulations, highlighting this registration as a profound source of pride not only for the nation but for all Cambodians. The krama, a traditional scarf emblematic of Cambodian culture, received unanimous approval from the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, documented in decision 19.COM 7.b.27.
“This registration is another new pride of Cambodia, which has achieved achievements for the nation and the entire Cambodian people,” stated Hun Sen. He emphasized the krama’s importance as a culturally significant artifact and a valuable contribution to both the Cambodian nation and the international community in protecting and promoting intangible heritage.
On this auspicious occasion, the Senate President extended his deepest gratitude to Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, and King Norodom Sihamoni, for their unwavering support of the Royal Government's cultural initiatives. He recognized the critical role of national cultural heritage, particularly intangible elements that are often at risk of being forgotten.
Furthermore, Hun Sen praised the collaboration among the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, relevant institutions, and both national and international experts. He expressed appreciation for their concerted efforts in preserving the krama’s legacy for future generations, underscoring its significance as a cultural treasure for humanity.
