Phnom Penh, November 22, 2024: Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), welcomed Khin Yi, President of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) of Myanmar, for a courtesy call at the Sokha Hotel.
The meeting marked Khin Yi's participation in the 12th International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) and the IPTP meeting convened by Cambodia, highlighting the deepening ties within the ICAPP framework. Samdech Hun Sen expressed his gratitude for Khin Yi's presence, acknowledging it as a testament to the strengthening of bilateral relations between the CPP and USDP.
Samdech Hun Sen praised the recent bilateral meeting held with Min Aung Laing during the GMS, ACMECS, and CLMV meetings in China, noting fruitful discussions that benefitted both parties.
In this context, Khin Yi conveyed his appreciation for the audience with Samdech Hun Sen and raised two pivotal requests. First, he proposed the establishment of a formal cooperation agreement between the USDP and the CPP to enhance collaboration and exchange of best practices. Khin Yi expressed a keen interest in understanding the successful strategies employed by the CPP to maintain its support among the Cambodian populace.
Secondly, Khin Yi requested the assistance of the Cambodian People's Party in observing Myanmar's upcoming elections slated for November 2025. He complimented the electoral process in Cambodia, deeming it free, fair, and well-organized, and reflected on the valuable experiences gained from past electoral observations within the ICAPP framework. He indicated a desire to model Myanmar's election preparations on Cambodia's successful practices.
In response to these requests, Samdech Hun Sen affirmed the CPP's willingness to sign the cooperation agreement at an appropriate future date and expressed readiness to send a delegation to observe the Myanmar elections.
During the dialogue, Samdech Hun Sen reflected on his previous visit to Myanmar shortly after assuming the ASEAN chairmanship, emphasizing Cambodia's commitment to supporting Myanmar in achieving peace and stability. He also expressed condolences for the recent flooding caused by Cyclone Yagi, underscoring a compassionate outreach towards the Myanmar people during their time of need.
This meeting underscored the continued efforts to strengthen ties between Cambodia and Myanmar, as both nations seek collaborative pathways amid regional challenges.
