Prime Minister Hun Manet Leads Closing Ceremony, Sets Strategic Goals for Mining and Energy Sectors
Phnom Penh, November 21, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet, , presided over the closing ceremony of the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s conference on the work results of 2023 and 2024, as well as the goals for 2025, on the afternoon of November 21, 2024.
During the conference, His Excellency Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, reported on the ministry's significant efforts over the past 1 year and 3 months, emphasizing a focus on improving the business environment, reducing bureaucracy, and alleviating cost burdens. He outlined three specific approaches to managing and developing the mining sector: revenue, environment, and safety and welfare. The minister also highlighted priorities related to the petroleum sector, including solutions for petroleum development amidst overlapping maritime claims with Thailand, the resumption of production at the Block A petroleum project, and ensuring the safe supply of petroleum products.
In addressing the energy sector, the Minister mentioned a commitment to a development strategy characterized by four approaches: clean, affordable, stable, and equitable energy. He reiterated the importance of these approaches in line with global trends to enhance economic growth and social development.
Prime Minister Hun Manet praised the ministry for its accomplishments, particularly in the recovery of Cambodia's stone industry, which he noted has grown by over 4% since his intervention regarding taxing challenges. He expressed a potential interest in documenting his experiences in addressing issues within the mineral sector during his time in office as a model for future governance.
In a notable directive, Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the Ministry of Mines and Energy to cease issuing licenses to mining companies in cultural and heritage areas, calling for an immediate halt to illegal mining activities. He reinforced his position against granting mining licenses in the Prey Lang area and emphasized the importance of protecting society and the environment while balancing resource conservation with cultural preservation.
Additionally, Hun Manet instructed relevant ministers to review gas supply arrangements in high-rise buildings to mitigate potential hazards, referencing previous incidents in developed countries. He called for a study on safety procedures and rules governing modern buildings with gas pipelines, urging collaboration among ministries and institutions to enhance safety measures.
