PHNOM PENH, 21 November 2024 — Cambodia’s National Assembly (NA) has unanimously approved Prak Sokhonn, the First Vice President of the Senate, as the country’s new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. He succeeds Sok Chenda Sophea, who will continue serving as Deputy Prime Minister.
The decision was made during the National Assembly’s 3rd session of the 7th legislature, held at the NA Palace this morning. The session was chaired by National Assembly President Khuon Sudary and attended by 112 lawmakers.
Prak Sokhonn brings extensive diplomatic experience to the position. Having previously served as Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister from 2016 to 2023, he has held several high-ranking government roles and was also an ambassador to various countries.
The reshuffle is part of a broader adjustment within the cabinet. In September, Sok Soken, previously Minister of Tourism, was approved as Minister of Inspection, while Huot Hak, former Minister of Inspection, took on the role of Minister of Tourism.
Observers have interpreted these changes as a strategic move by Prime Minister Hun Manet to bolster the efficiency and effectiveness of government institutions.
The appointment underscores Cambodia’s focus on continuity and expertise in foreign affairs during a time of increasing regional and global diplomatic challenges.
