Siem Reap: On the morning of November 10, 2024, the Angkor Artisan Silk Farm in Puok District, Siem Reap Province, officially reopened under the presidency of the First Lady Dr. Pich Chanmony Hun Manet. The reopening comes after an extended closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the reopening ceremony, Dr. Pich Chanmony Hun Manet expressed that the revival of Angkor silk handicrafts represents a continuation of traditional craftsmanship. She highlighted the importance of bringing back former employees to resume work at the farm.
Established in 1994, the Angkor Artisan Silk Farm is recognized as a major silk farm in Puok District, dedicated to producing woven handicrafts. Dr. Hun Manet noted her pride in Khmer clothing made from local silk, emphasizing her role in promoting Cambodian silk products to international leaders and during overseas visits.
She encouraged improved production and underlined the need to stimulate silk production through mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, silk research, weaving, and garment creation.
Kay Lot, Chairman and CEO of Angkor Artisans, shared that the COVID-19 crisis significantly impacted tourism, which in turn affected the company, leading to a complete halt in production activities from April 17, 2020. He emphasized the necessity of preserving Khmer heritage for future generations and stated the commitment to restoring the silk weaving craft.
The reopening of the silk farm also marks the return of many former employees, with the facility now employing over 400 individuals. The Chairman and CEO further revealed plans to expand silk production and enhance research and weaving processes at the farm.
