ECCC Launches Legacy Website to Raise Awareness of Khmer Rouge Trials

Phnom Penh, 12 November, 2024 —The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has announced the beta launch of its new legacy website (www.eccc.gov.kh), a dedicated platform aimed at preserving the history of the Khmer Rouge trials and promoting awareness of Cambodia’s accountability process.

Designed to serve as a resource for researchers, educators, and the public, the site provides detailed updates on court proceedings, access to public archives, and a suite of interactive tools to enhance understanding of the legal actions addressing Khmer Rouge atrocities, according to a press release received by the AKP.

Available in Khmer, English, and French, the new website sets a milestone by granting public access to ECCC's judicial findings and records, fostering greater transparency and engagement in the legacy of the trials.

Unprecedented Public Access to Archive

For the first time, users can directly access a comprehensive collection of public records related to the Khmer Rouge trials, available in the three languages. This includes over 1,350 judicial decisions and tens of thousands of evidentiary records, totaling over a million pages. The digital archive complements the paper archive available at the ECCC Resource Centre in Phnom Penh, enhancing accessibility for researchers, students, and the general public.

Interactive Tools to Enhance Education and Engagement

To bridge generational gaps and present complex historical information, the website offers several interactive features designed to educate and engage users. Key resources include a timeline that traces the rise and fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, the establishment and work of the ECCC from 2006 to 2022, and an interactive hierarchy map illustrating the Khmer Rouge leadership structure over time. An interactive crime site map details over 100 crime sites investigated by the ECCC, showcasing the scope of the investigations across Cambodia.

Supporting Education Across Cambodia

In conjunction with the ECCC Mobile Resource Centre’s outreach efforts, the website will be introduced to thousands of students across Cambodia, fostering greater awareness and understanding of Cambodian history, the Khmer Rouge trials, and the ECCC’s contributions both locally and globally.

Currently in its beta version, the site will continue to add new features, including a mobile-friendly version. The ECCC encourages users to provide feedback at pas@eccc.gov.kh to enhance the platform further, according to the press release.
