Phnom Penh, 12 November, 2024 —The 71st anniversary of Cambodia’s Independence Day concluded this afternoon as King Norodom Sihamoni extinguished the victory flame at Phnom Penh’s iconic Independence Monument. The flame had been ceremonially lit on November 9 to mark Cambodia's historic achievement of independence.
Prominent leaders, including Senate President and Supreme Privy Council President Hun Sen, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, and Prime Minister Hun Manet, joined the event alongside senior officials, civil servants, members of the armed forces, and residents of Phnom Penh. The ceremony attracted a large audience, including students and local citizens, who gathered to honor Cambodia’s path to sovereignty and freedom.
In attendance were also foreign ambassadors to Cambodia, reflecting the international acknowledgment of the occasion. The event was broadcast live on national television and radio stations, bringing the celebration to audiences across the country.
Cambodia’s independence from French colonial rule was secured on November 9, 1953, under the leadership of the late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, who is celebrated as the architect of Cambodia's independence, national unity, and territorial integrity.
The conclusion of this year’s Independence Day ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of the nation’s legacy and the enduring impact of its leaders on Cambodia’s journey toward self-determination.
