Typhoons Yinxing and Toraji Impact Northeast Monsoon Regime

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Typhoons 22 and 23, Yinxing and Toraji, are currently exerting a strong influence on the northeast monsoon regime in the region. Typhoon Yinxing has intensified into a hurricane, while Typhoon Toraji, originating in the South China Sea, is moving in a similar direction. This weather pattern has led to low-pressure systems affecting the South China Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and Cambodia, including the lower reaches of the Mekong River Basin.

From November 11 to 13, 2024, the weather forecast indicates a minimum temperature of 21 °C and an average temperature of 32 °C across much of Cambodia. Winds from the northeast and east are expected to average 4.5 meters per second. Areas such as Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, Siem Reap, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Kandal, Takeo, and Phnom Penh are likely to experience approximately 10% rainfall.

In the highland regions, minimum temperatures will be around 20 °C with average temperatures at 30 °C. Winds from the northeast and east will have an average speed of 5 m/s, with Kampong Speu, Pailin, Stung Treng, Kratie, Ratanakkiri, Mondulkiri, as well as the Cardamom and Dangrek mountain ranges expected to receive about 5% rainfall.

Coastal areas are forecasted to have a minimum temperature of 21 °C and an average temperature of 31 °C, with winds from the northeast and southeast averaging 4 meters per second. Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and the Bokor mountains may see around 15% rainfall, along with wave heights ranging from a minimum average of 0.50 meters to a maximum average of 1.25 meters.
