Phnom Penh: According to an announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, a newborn dolphin was spotted by a research team from the Fisheries Administration and WWF on November 8, 2024, in Anlong Kampi, Chroy Banteay village, Sambok commune, Chit Borei district, Kratie Province. The baby dolphin is reported to be in good health, accompanied by two larger dolphins.
This marks the ninth baby dolphin born in 2024, the highest birth rate since 2021. Historical data reveals that in 2021, Cambodia recorded six newborn dolphins alongside nine deaths. The following year, 2022, saw the birth of six dolphins and eleven deaths. In 2023, eight dolphins were born, while five died. As of early November 2024, the figures indicate nine dolphin births with only three deaths.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to the river communities, local authorities, and the public for their efforts in caring for and protecting these vital fishery resources, which are considered national treasures. Fishermen who spot dolphins are encouraged to report their sightings to the Fisheries Authority at the following numbers: 012 897 943, 011 355 883, 099 791 919, 092 918 144, and 017 818 382.
