Svay Rieng, November 5, 2024 – Cambodian police have successfully recaptured a Vietnamese detainee who escaped from Svay Rieng Provincial Prison on October 28, 2024. The detainee, 17-year-old Pheang Ding Tun, fled during a visit from 24-year-old Nguyen Tong Feng, a fellow Vietnamese national.
According to the Svay Rieng Provincial Police Commissioner, the escape occurred at approximately 4:40 PM. After a brief visit, Pheang Ding Tun exited the prison, followed by Nguyen Tong Feng, who reportedly took a firearm from Pheang and fired at a prison defense officer before both individuals fled on a motorcycle.
Following the escape, Svay Rieng Provincial Police collaborated with prison guards and the Criminal Police Department. Under the direction of General Sar Thet, the National Police Commissioner, Major General Pich Virak, Police Commissioner for Svay Rieng Province, led the operation to recapture the escapees. Lt. Col. Kim Lay, Deputy Commissioner for Criminal Police Planning, was designated to oversee the specialized search team.
The operation included cooperation with the Long An Provincial Border Guard Command from Vietnam. As a result, both Nguyen Tong Feng and Pheang Ding Tun were apprehended. Authorities confiscated one motorcycle and two firearms, including an air weapon, during the operation.
