PHNOM PENH, September 13, 2024 — A ceremony marking the completion of the renovation of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port’s General Cargo Quay into a 253-meter container berth was held today, presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet, Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea, and Japan’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Ueno Atsushi.
In his speech, Ambassador Ueno highlighted the longstanding cooperation between Japan and Cambodia, particularly in the development of Sihanoukville Port, which he described as central to the bilateral relationship.
"It is my greatest honor and a pleasure to be participating in this ceremony to celebrate the completion of the renovation of the General Cargo Quay of Sihanoukville Port into a 253 meters, together with Prime Minister Hun Manet, His Excellency Minister Peng Ponea, and all the other distinguished guests," said Ambassador Ueno.
He expressed his congratulations to Lou Kim Chhum, Director General of the Sihanoukville Port Authority (PAS), and the PAS staff for their efforts, while also acknowledging the cooperation between Japan and Cambodia that made the project possible.
"Sihanoukville Port has always been at the center of Japan-Cambodia cooperation," Ueno stated, recalling agreements made during Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio's visit to Cambodia in 2022 and further discussions held during Prime Minister Hun Manet’s visit to Japan in 2023.
"At the Summit meeting held during Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to Japan last December, the Prime Minister asked Prime Minister KISHIDA to support a master plan to develop Sihanoukville Port into a regional port and logistics hub. The Japanese government agreed and immediately started implementing this request," Ueno added.
Ambassador Ueno also promised continued Japanese support for the port's future development, aligned with Cambodia's Pentagonal Strategy and Japan’s Development Cooperation Charter.
"Now, in the presence of Prime Minister Hun Manet, I promise the people of Cambodia that the Government of Japan will continue to cooperate with the Cambodian side on further expansion and improvement of Sihanoukville Port," said Ueno.
He further noted that Japan's involvement in the port’s development extends beyond government support. The Ambassador highlighted the opening of a new logistics warehouse by AEON Mall Logi-Plus, located within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) adjacent to the port, as part of efforts to enhance the port's capacity.
Before concluding, Ambassador Ueno thanked Prime Minister Hun Manet for his leadership and expressed his commitment to strengthening Japan-Cambodia relations.
"As Ambassador of Japan, I’m looking forward to continuing to work closely with you, Samdech Thipadei, and the members of his Cabinet, to further the development of Cambodia and enhance our bilateral relationship," Ueno said.
The ceremony concluded with well wishes for the success and growth of Sihanoukville Port and the continued friendly relations between Japan and Cambodia.
