Authorities Foil Plan to Overthrow Government, 200 Suspects Identified

The Ministry of Interior has announced the successful disruption of a planned extremist opposition demonstration aimed at overthrowing the legitimate government. Scheduled for August 18, 2024, the demonstration was prevented through coordinated security measures implemented by local authorities, the armed forces, and the People's Defense Forces, as per the Ministry’s statement dated September 3, 2024.

According to the Ministry, anti-government activists had attempted to incite protests throughout Cambodia up until the end of August. However, these efforts failed to materialize into action.

The Ministry of Interior stated, “The failure of these extremist groups is attributed to the effective security measures enforced by local authorities, the armed forces at all levels, and the People's Defense Forces nationwide.” The Ministry praised the resilience of the youth and citizens from all walks of life who did not succumb to incitement or deceptive tactics.

Furthermore, some network leaders, both domestic and abroad, have reportedly come forward to confess and disclose the masterminds behind the plot. Despite this, a small number of extremists persisted with their illegal plans, attempting to enter Phnom Penh.

In response, authorities took preventive actions, stopping 188 suspects from entering Phnom Penh by explaining the situation, educating them, and allowing them to return home. Among these individuals, 57 were arrested, with administrative measures taken to educate and instruct them before they were released under contract to return home. Several network leaders were apprehended and sent to court with strong evidence, including firearms, dangerous materials, and incitement directives.

The Ministry of Interior expressed gratitude to the Cambodian people for their solidarity with the Royal Government and the Armed Forces in protecting peace and social stability. The Ministry reaffirmed its confidence in the patriotic spirit of the Cambodian people, local authorities, armed forces, and the People's Defense Forces in supporting the legitimate Royal Government to maintain security, public order, and peace, which are essential for the nation's development.
