Cambodia and Thailand Strengthen Diplomatic Ties Through Farewell Meeting with Thai Ambassador
PHNOM PENH: On the morning of September 4, 2024, a significant diplomatic event unfolded in Phnom Penh as National Assembly President Khuon Sodary welcomed Mr. Cherdkiat ATTHAKOR, the outgoing Ambassador of Thailand to Cambodia. This meeting marked the end of Ambassador Cherdkiat’s two-year tenure in Cambodia, a period that witnessed the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.
During their discussion, President Khuon Sodary expressed heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Cherdkiat for his dedicated efforts in promoting the steady development of Cambodian-Thai relations. She noted the deep-rooted history between the two nations, dating back to the 1950s, when Cambodia was still striving for independence from French colonial rule. This long-standing partnership, she emphasized, has flourished at various levels—governmental, royal, and among the people themselves—reflecting a shared commitment to cooperation and mutual respect.
Dr. Keo Piseth, Permanent Deputy Secretary-General, Director of the Cabinet, and Spokesman for the President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, reported that Ambassador Cherdkiat’s tenure coincided with a pivotal period in Cambodia’s political landscape, including the National Assembly elections and the transition of leadership from the older generation to new leaders. President Khuon Sodary underscored that these developments are crucial steps toward achieving Cambodia’s vision of becoming a high-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050. Despite his relatively short stay, the Ambassador played a vital role in witnessing and supporting these historic moments.
Reflecting on his service, Ambassador Cherdkiat recounted his long-standing connection with Cambodia, dating back to his first mission in 1994. He highlighted the remarkable peace and development Cambodia has achieved since then, and praised the efforts of the new generation of government leaders in driving the nation towards its ambitious goals. He also recalled his involvement in fostering bilateral relations through initiatives like promoting religious programs and awarding medals to key Cambodian figures.
A key focus of their meeting was the discussion on enhancing trade and investment ties between Cambodia and Thailand. Both leaders acknowledged the impressive trade volume of over $9 billion in 2023 and set an ambitious target of $15 billion by 2025. They also explored the potential of tourism collaboration through the “one-destination” concept, aiming to create a seamless experience for tourists visiting both countries.
The conversation also touched on the essential role of Cambodian workers in Thailand’s economy. President Khuon Sodary expressed her appreciation for Thailand's support in providing employment and skills training to 1.2 million Cambodian workers. These workers not only contribute to Thailand’s economy but also bring valuable skills back to Cambodia, bolstering its development.
Cultural and educational cooperation was another highlight of the meeting. President Khuon Sodary voiced her support for joint heritage registration initiatives to preserve the shared cultural and traditional values of the two nations, thereby avoiding potential conflicts. Ambassador Cherdkiat echoed this sentiment, recognizing the importance of education and skill development in strengthening bilateral ties. He cited Thailand’s contributions, such as scholarships for Cambodian students and the establishment of the Office of Thai Language Studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.
As the meeting concluded, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the partnership between Cambodia and Thailand. They expressed optimism for continued cooperation in trade, education, tourism, and cultural exchange, paving the way for a more interconnected and prosperous future for both countries.
Ambassador Cherdkiat’s farewell visit was not just a closing chapter of his diplomatic mission but also a celebration of the enduring friendship and collaboration between Cambodia and Thailand, underscoring the shared vision and mutual aspirations of the two nations.
