Banteay Meanchey Hit by Flooding

Banteay Meanchey: After a night of heavy rain, flooding has hit the Banteay Meanchey district of Malai. The area is home to a border crossing with Thailand. In parts of the district, residents are up to a metre-deep in water. Cassava and cornfields have also been flooded, as have several troop camps where soldiers are monitoring the border.

Deputy Governor of Malai District, Sok Penh Non, says heavy rains usually affect these lowland areas every year. He expects water levels to recede within the next four to five days.

Heavy rain has lashed central Thailand and northwestern Cambodia in recent days. In Bangkok, water pumps have been called into unclog drainage systems in anticipation of more downpours this week. The Thai Meteorological Department as well as Cambodia’s Weather Office have warned of heavy downpours until the weekend.
