Two Shocking Suicides on Same Day

Cambodia has been shocked by news of two separate suicides in the country on the same day. A man with disabilities took his own life with a homemade explosive in Banteay Meanchey on Tuesday morning. Acting Inspector of Phnom Srok District, Pek Kimhak, says the man was 54-years-old, had fallen ill and had been living with his disability for more than 10 years. He lived alone in the village of Ket Heto Khang Ley.

Tuesday’s second suicide was reported in Siem Reap, where a young man shot himself in a cassava plantation in Trapeang Thmor village in the Ta Siem commune of Svay Leu district. He was just 17 years old. According to his mother, he married a woman in July and later went to live with his parents-in-law in Oddar Meanchey, but returned with his wife and son a few weeks later. She has told authorities her son was a troubled man and had tried to kill himself on two separate occasions.
