Cambodian, Malaysian Information Ministers Agree to Collaborate on Anti-False Information Initiative to Strengthen Information Security

KUALA LUMPUR, September 2, 2024 — The Minister of Information of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Neth Pheaktra, paid a courtesy call on his Malaysian counterpart, Mr. Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil, Minister of Communications of Malaysia, during the 22nd League Conference and the 19th Asia Media Summit, organized by the Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Development Institute in Malaysia.

In their meeting, the two ministers underscored the significance of collaboration between the Ministry of Information of Cambodia and the Ministry of Communications of Malaysia, particularly in the framework of information exchange. This cooperation aims to enhance the flow of information between the Cambodian News Agency and Malaysia's National News Agency, BERNAMA, alongside partnerships involving radio broadcasts.

The two ministers emphasized their shared commitment to combatting the spread of fake news and agreed to exchange experiences and best practices related to information dissemination to ensure the security of information for consumers. They also committed to initiating measures that would enhance information security and order for the citizens of both countries. Additionally, they agreed to extend an invitation to other ASEAN countries to join Cambodia and Malaysia in this anti-false information initiative, seeking a unified regional response to the challenge.

On September 1, 2024, Mr. Neth Pheaktra addressed member countries of the Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Development Institute (AIBD), calling for collective action against the spread of counterfeit information, which poses a common challenge across the region. His call to action received considerable support and enthusiasm from member states, underscoring the shared recognition of the need to raise public awareness and safeguard the integrity of information.

This bilateral effort marks a significant step forward in strengthening information security and promoting reliable information dissemination practices within ASEAN and beyond. Both Cambodia and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a collaborative approach to combating misinformation, reflecting their dedication to safeguarding the information landscape for their citizens.
