Hun Manet Urges Ministries and Institutions to Enhance Support for the Elderly

PHNOM PENH, August 27, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed all ministries and relevant institutions in Cambodia to increase their attention and support for the elderly to improve their well-being. This directive aims to ensure comprehensive care and support for the aging population.

In a circular concerning the organization of the Cambodian Day of the Elderly and the International Day of the Elderly, set for October 1, 2024, Hun Manet emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the significance of this day among Cambodians of all ages. The theme for this year's celebration is "The Elderly in the Digital Revolution," underscoring the need to integrate elderly care within the context of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The Prime Minister called on the Ministry of Social Affairs and the National Committee for the Elderly to collaborate with various stakeholders to effectively celebrate these observances. He also urged provincial and municipal administrations to organize ceremonies that include civil servants, members of the armed forces, monks, clergy, and citizens of all ages, promoting a broader understanding of the national policy on the elderly, which spans from 2017 to 2030.

Hun Manet further instructed local administrations to support the establishment of more senior citizens' associations across communities in Cambodia, fostering a spirit of solidarity and mutual assistance. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, disabled, poor, and homeless. Development partners, NGOs, and international organizations are encouraged to continue supporting existing programs that contribute to the development of senior citizens' associations.

The Prime Minister also directed all ministries and institutions involved in the Cambodian National Committee for the Elderly to establish dedicated working groups to promote the implementation of the National Policy on the Elderly. He stressed the importance of ministries, institutions, and local administrations meeting with elderly citizens at religious sites such as pagodas and temples, offering donations to assist those in need.

The Ministry of Information has been tasked with ensuring that public and private media outlets widely disseminate information about the activities planned for the Cambodian Day of the Elderly and the International Day of the Elderly on October 1, 2024. Additionally, the Ministry of Cults is encouraged to guide religious activities in pagodas, temples, and other religious sites, with the support of clergy, development partners, philanthropists, and other foundations. These efforts aim to provide the elderly and vulnerable with a decent standard of living, including access to food, shelter, and spiritual care.
