PHNOM PENH, August 27, 2024 — The Royal Government of Cambodia has declared the Cambodian Day of the Elderly and the International Day of the Elderly as occasions to honor the contributions and legacy of Cambodian elders. These celebrations serve as a reminder of the invaluable contributions that the elderly have made to society, leaving behind a legacy for current and future generations.
According to a recent circular outlining the observance of these days on October 1, 2024, Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the Cambodian Day of the Elderly and the International Day of the Elderly will be observed in line with the National Policy on the Elderly 2017-2030 and the United Nations Resolution. The aim of the celebration is to promote the well-being of the elderly and acknowledge their vital role in passing down knowledge, skills, and experience to younger generations.
Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the Royal Government's commitment to the welfare of Cambodia's elderly population. To this end, the government established the Cambodian National Committee for the Elderly through Sub-Decree No. 158 on July 15, 2011. The committee's mandate was further revised by Sub-Decree No. 131 on June 6, 2024, to enhance its role in developing policies and initiatives aimed at supporting the elderly.
The Cambodian Day of the Elderly and the International Day of the Elderly, set for October 1 each year, is organized to coincide with the global observance of the International Day of the Elderly. These celebrations are intended to recognize the merits of Cambodian elders, including ancestors, parents, uncles, and aunts, who have built a precious legacy for future generations.
The Royal Government views these observances as a time to reflect on the contributions of the elderly and to renew its commitment to their welfare, acknowledging their essential role in the nation's development and cultural heritage.
