BREAKING: 31 People Arrested After Plotting to Overthrow Government: Security Forces Prevent Planned Riots
Phnom Penh: On August 18, 2024, a major police operation successfully dismantled a riot plan aimed at overthrowing the Cambodian government, resulting in the arrest of 31 individuals. This critical announcement was made by General Chhay Kim Khoeun, Deputy Commissioner and Spokesman for the National Police, who confirmed that among those arrested were two women involved in the conspiracy.
In light of escalating concerns regarding extremist opposition groups, both domestically and internationally, Prime Minister Hun Manet took immediate and decisive action. Under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha and Dr. Neth Savoeun, the government implemented a robust strategy to enhance security and uphold public order. This effort saw close collaboration between the National Police Commissioner, the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, and local authorities, focusing on preventing any attempts to undermine the legitimacy of the Royal Government. Security measures were deployed across various sectors, including political, diplomatic, economic, cultural, and tourism centers.
The crackdown stemmed from intelligence regarding planned actions by extremist opposition groups on August 18. Authorities successfully thwarted these plans by arresting the 31 individuals, including two women who were preparing to mobilize at designated locations. During the operation, police confiscated potential weapons, including gasoline bottles, knives, sticks, Sling shots, and ammunition, which were intended for use against law enforcement.
Following the successful operation, the General Commissioner of the National Police expressed gratitude to all involved forces and authorities for their role in neutralizing the potential threat. The police emphasized the critical importance of community support in safeguarding peace and maintaining the legitimacy of the government, which is seen as deriving its power from the will of the people.
Furthermore, the General Commissioner of the National Police urged citizens to remain vigilant against the deceptive political tactics employed by extremist opposition groups. Officials underscored the risks these groups pose by exploiting the populace to pursue their own ambitions while often neglecting the well-being of ordinary citizens in their quest for power.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges within Cambodia's political landscape, as the government remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving stability and security for its citizens. As the nation continues to navigate these complexities, the emphasis on law and order will be crucial in fostering a safe environment.
