Committee Reviews Progress, Discusses Development of Digital Platform for Informal Economy Registration
On August 15, 2024, the Coordinating Committee for Developing the Informal Economy convened a meeting to assess progress and discuss plan to launch the digital platform for registering the informal economy.
During the meeting held at the Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, the committee's secretariat delivered a progress update on the implementation of the strategy and the benefit packages introduced by key stakeholders.
The Digital Economy and Business Committee also showcased a digital platform designed to facilitate informal economy registration. This platform, accessible via web portal, mobile app, or partner agents such as financial institutions, business associations, and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), was demonstrated as user-friendly, with the registration process taking approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
H.E. HEM Vanndy, committee chair and Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, reiterated that registration is voluntary, with various pathways. The data collected through the platform will provide valuable insights for policy formulation and necessary government interventions. It will also facilitate future transitions to the formal business registration.
The meeting lauded the platform development and underscored the importance of extensive outreach efforts to promote registration. The platform is seen as a critical step for the stakeholders to promote formalization of the informal economy in their respective sectors, providing the registered participants with access to benefit packages, including social security, financial services, skill development, and government support programs.
Meanwhile, the committee agreed to seek government approval for the launch of the registration platform and a nationwide campaign.
Emphasizing the need for a monitoring and evaluation in line with the government's approach, Minister Vanndy requested ministries, institutions, and provincial administrations to provide timely updates on their sectoral progress so the secretariat can prepare a overall progress report for the government.
