Cambodian Rapper Vanda Celebrated Upon Return from Summer Olympics in France

Phnom Penh – Renowned Cambodian rapper Man Vanda returned to Cambodia this morning, August 14, 2024, to a warm and enthusiastic reception at Phnom Penh International Airport. His arrival was met with applause from the public and top officials, including Dr. Thong Khon, Senior Minister and President of the Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), and Mr. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and Secretary General of the NOCC.


Vanda’s participation in the Summer Olympics in France has been a source of immense pride for the Cambodian nation. Upon his return, he expressed his deep gratitude, stating, "My presence at the Summer Olympics in France is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a great honor for the whole Cambodian nation." He emphasized that carrying the Cambodian flag and performing in Khmer at such a prestigious international event was a significant achievement, not just for him but for the entire country.


While Vanda remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his involvement at the Olympics, he did highlight the emotional significance of representing Cambodia on the global stage. "This is a great victory for me, our people, and our country," he remarked, acknowledging the overwhelming pride he felt.

The reception at the airport was marked by heartfelt speeches from Cambodian officials. Dr. Thong Khon praised Vanda's presence at the Olympic Games, noting its impact on the world Olympic movement and the Cambodian youth. He emphasized that Vanda's performance resonated strongly with the younger generation, particularly because rap music and youth culture were prominently featured at this year's Olympics, including popular sports like Break Dance.


Dr. Thong Khon also highlighted two significant honors France bestowed upon Cambodia during the Olympics: the allocation of a separate boat for Cambodian athletes at the opening ceremony and the inclusion of Vanda as a representative of Cambodia’s burgeoning music industry. These gestures, according to Dr. Thong Khon, reflect the respect and recognition Cambodia has earned on the international stage, despite being a developing nation with a relatively young music industry.


Rapper Vanda, clearly moved by the reception, expressed his thanks to the Cambodian leadership, particularly mentioning the support of high-ranking officials. He concluded his remarks by expressing hope that other Cambodian artists will have similar opportunities in the future, ensuring that Cambodia continues to make its mark in global cultural events.
