Hun Sen Asserts Government Will Take All Necessary Measures to Maintain Peace Amidst Illegal Riots
Phnom Penh: Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to taking decisive action against those who seek to destabilize the country through illegal riots and unrest.
In a special audio message, Senate President Hun Sen emphasized that no country in the world allows illegal insurgencies to go unchecked, citing examples such as the United Kingdom, where armed forces are deployed to quell riots. He made it clear that Cambodia will similarly enforce legal measures to maintain order and security.
“The riots in Britain were suppressed by the British armed forces and police,” Senate President Hun Sen stated. “Should the Cambodian government allow the situation to spiral out of control? Absolutely not. The Royal Government of Cambodia will take all necessary measures to safeguard the peace and security of its citizens.”
The President of the Senate also addressed comparisons being made between events in Cambodia and those in Bangladesh, which he attributed to foreign provocateurs attempting to incite unrest among Cambodians. He warned that while protests may be tolerated abroad, the consequences within Cambodia would be severe, and the government would not be lenient.
The President of the Senate further noted that protests in foreign countries are primarily a concern for those nations, but in Cambodia, the government is responsible for protecting its people from the fallout. He clarified that his statements were not threats but a reaffirmation of the government's duty to ensure national stability.
Responding to accusations from extremist groups claiming he is "powerless," Senate President Hun Sen dismissed these claims, recalling similar threats from the Khmer Rouge in the 1980s. He reiterated his unwavering resolve and the continued strength of the Cambodian People's Party to uphold its promises of peace and stability.
He issued a stern warning to those contemplating participation in the "United for the Nation" group, advising them to abandon their plans or face legal consequences. He revealed that authorities are already monitoring members of this group, which he accused of plotting to overthrow the Royal Government through both mass mobilization and armed insurrection.
Senate President Hun Sen clarified the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam development triangle cooperation, urging those who are misinformed about the agreement to consult official documents available on the Ministry of Commerce’s website.
He concluded by stating that the Royal Government’s priority is to protect the legitimate government and, by extension, the people of Cambodia. Those who continue to align with groups intent on overthrowing the government, he warned, will be held accountable.
