Senate President Warns Against Overstepping Legal Boundaries

Phnom Penh, 13 August 2024: Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen issued a stern reminder to citizens not to overstep the boundaries of the law, emphasizing the importance of respecting the legitimacy of the Royal Government.

In a voice message released on social media this afternoon, Hun Sen addressed recent calls from abroad that allegedly aimed to incite actions to overthrow the legitimate government. He firmly dismissed any comparison between the situation in Cambodia and that of Bangladesh, urging those making such comparisons to rethink their views.

“There is no parallel between the circumstances in Bangladesh and Cambodia. Anyone drawing such comparisons should reconsider,” the former Prime Minister stated.

Hun Sen reiterated his appeal for the public to carefully consider their actions and to respect the rule of law. He emphasized that while the Cambodian constitution guarantees freedom of expression, it also clearly delineates the limits of this freedom, particularly when it comes to actions against the government.

“There is a red line. The constitution guarantees freedom of expression, but it also makes clear distinctions. Be cautious and distinguish between the real situation in Cambodia and the narratives being pushed by extremists abroad,” he underlined.
