Battambang, August 9, 2024 — The Minister of Rural Development, Mr. Chhay Rithy Sen, led a vibrant celebration at the Battambang Provincial Football Stadium on Friday morning, marking the 30th and 20th World Indigenous Peoples' Day in Cambodia. The event, themed "Protection of Indigenous Peoples' Right to Live and Communicate in a Traditional Way," was attended by a diverse group of participants, including senior leaders from the Ministry of Rural Development, provincial authorities, national and international dignitaries, and representatives from various youth and civil society organizations. A total of 850 Cambodian youth and indigenous representatives were present to commemorate this significant occasion.

During the ceremony, Minister Chhay Rithy Sen delivered a powerful message highlighting the Royal Government of Cambodia's commitment to the protection and promotion of indigenous peoples' rights. He read out a special message from Prime Minister Hun Manet, which underscored the importance of safeguarding the cultural heritage, traditions, and languages of indigenous communities as vital components of the nation's identity and future.

The Minister also took the opportunity to convey heartfelt greetings and blessings from Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate and Chairman of the Supreme Council of the King, Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Red Cross, and Prime Minister Hun Manet, along with Dr. Pech Chanmony Hun Manet. Their messages highlighted the high-level recognition of the importance of indigenous peoples in Cambodia's social and cultural fabric.

In his speech, Minister Chhay Rithy Sen commended the efforts of various ministries, institutions, development partners, and national and international organizations in supporting the development and preservation of indigenous communities. He called on all stakeholders to continue their collaboration, particularly in implementing activities that align with national policies, laws, and relevant legal frameworks. The Minister also urged the continued provision of technical support and resources to ensure the effective development and conservation of indigenous peoples in Cambodia.
