Cambodian National Assembly President Proposes MOU with Philippine Legislature

Phnom Penh, July 30, 2024 — Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, has voiced strong support for establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Cambodia and the Philippines to enhance legislative cooperation between the two nations.

In a meeting with the newly appointed Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia, Florida Ann Camille P. Mayo, this morning, Sudary expressed her commitment to advancing bilateral relations. The discussion was facilitated by Mr. Keo Piseth, Chief Cabinet of the Speaker of the National Assembly, who briefed the media on the key outcomes of the meeting.

"Samdech [Khuon Sudary] hopes that in the near future, we will see deeper cooperation with the Philippine legislature," Piseth said. "envisions a framework similar to the one we have between our National Assembly and Senate, which would include further memoranda for exchange, sharing, and mutual learning."

Cambodia and the Philippines have maintained official diplomatic relations since August 1957. During the meeting, Ambassador Mayo expressed her commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries, particularly in areas such as business, agriculture, and education. She suggested that Filipino investors might show increased interest in these sectors within Cambodia.

President Khuon Sudary emphasized the potential for enhanced collaboration under the Cambodia newly leadership, highlighting a pentagonal strategy aimed at achieving multiple developmental goals. This approach seeks to open up new avenues for partnership and cooperation between Cambodia and the Philippines.

The discussions are set to continue with further deliberations at the IPA Inter-Parliamentary Assembly later this year, where detailed plans for the proposed MOU are expected to be discussed.
