Cambodia's National Assembly President Lauds Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor for Enhancing Bilateral Relations and Cultural Ties

National Assembly Palace, Phnom Penh, 29 July 2024 — Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, warmly received Mr. Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and his delegation during their visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In a cordial meeting, President Khuon reflected on her previous visit to Gyeongsangbuk-do in 2019, where she attended the Gyeongju World Culture Expo. The event highlighted the Silla Kingdom's rich historical and cultural heritage alongside modern technological advancements. She expressed gratitude for the memorable experiences at historical sites such as Bulguk Temple and Seokguram Grotto, noting the cultural similarities between the Silla Dynasty and the Angkor Empire.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo extended his congratulations to President Khuon on her recent appointment and acknowledged the historical and cultural bonds between Cambodia and Gyeongsangbuk-do. He emphasized the ongoing cultural exchanges, including the Angkor-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2006, which celebrated the heritage of both the Silla and Angkor civilizations.

Lee also expressed appreciation for Cambodia's support of Korea during the Korean War and praised Cambodia's focus on human capital and healthcare as foundational to its development. Since the re-establishment of diplomatic ties in 1997, Cambodia and South Korea have enjoyed a robust partnership, recently elevated to a 'strategic partnership.' This relationship includes nine sister-city partnerships between Cambodian provinces and South Korean regions, and has been further strengthened by numerous marriages between citizens of the two countries.

President Khuon highlighted the high regard held by Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen for South Korea’s steadfast friendship, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when Korean flights remained operational. She acknowledged Korea's contribution of volunteer doctors to Cambodia and their role in fostering peace and prosperity in the region.

In recognition of his significant contributions to enhancing bilateral relations and cultural connections, King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia awarded Governor Lee the Royal Order of Sahametrei Grand Cross.

President Khuon Sudary concluded the meeting by expressing heartfelt thanks to the Republic of Korea for its continued support and friendship, wishing the delegation health and success in their future endeavors.
