National Assembly President Urges Lawmakers to Prioritize Citizens' Welfare

PHNOM PENH, July 26, 2024 — National Assembly President Khuon Sodary emphasized the need for deputies to stay connected with citizens to grasp their needs and issues, during the closing of the second session of the National Assembly of the 7th legislature on July 25, 2024. She highlighted the importance of making the people the centerpiece of their efforts and intervening through the National Assembly's mechanisms to effectively address public grievances and requests.

In her address, Sodary underscored the Assembly’s role in serving the nation and its citizens, focusing on its legislative functions, oversight of law enforcement, representation of citizens, and international parliamentary diplomacy. The session reviewed the achievements of the past three months, where the National Assembly handled 25 public complaints and requests. This included issuing intervention letters for seven cases to the relevant ministries and progressing studies on 19 others.

Sodary, the first woman to chair Cambodia's National Assembly, lauded the deputies for their active engagement in fulfilling their duties according to the law. She encouraged continued dedication to understanding and improving the welfare of the people.

Over the past three months, the National Assembly’s committees have actively visited various provinces to monitor the implementation of laws and political programs at sub-national levels, including 11 inspections of judicial functions in courts and appeal courts.
