National Assembly Approves Ratification of Montreal Convention 1999

PHNOM PENH, July 26, 2024 — In a significant move to enhance its aviation sector, Cambodia's National Assembly has approved the draft law for the ratification of the Montreal Convention 1999, which governs international air transport regulations.

This approval occurred during the second plenary session of the National Assembly’s 7th Legislature, led by President Khuon Sudary.

Although Cambodia signed the Montreal Convention in 1999, the ratification process had not been completed until now. The convention aims to unify and modernize the rules of international air transportation, focusing on the compensation aspects in cases of accidents, and has been ratified by several Asian countries including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Brunei in recent years.

With the formal ratification, Cambodia is set to enhance its legal framework for international air travel. This is expected to bolster confidence among air travelers and international air transport enterprises operating within and in connection with Cambodia.

The move is also part of a broader international effort led by air transport associations to promote the Montreal Convention as a modern, equitable, and universally applicable framework, aiming to elevate the global aviation industry standards.
