Senate President Hun Sen Highlights Economic Connectivity in Cambodia's Northeast via CLV Development Triangle
PHNOM PENH, July 24, 2024 — Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, emphasized the significant role of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam (CLV) Development Triangle in enhancing economic connections among Cambodia's northeastern provinces. The initiative focuses on vital infrastructural developments, including roadways, tourism, and trade.
Hun Sen detailed how, before the Electricity of Cambodia (EDC) extended services to the provinces of Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, and Kratie, these areas were reliant on electrical power from Vietnam. Similarly, Stung Treng province has historically depended on Vietnamese electricity supplies. This cross-border cooperation has facilitated numerous advantages, notably in electricity provision and the transportation of goods via Vietnamese ports.
In a special address regarding the CLV Development Triangle delivered on July 23, 2024, Hun Sen highlighted the strategic importance of this cooperation in bolstering national security. Efforts include the prevention of illegal activities such as timber smuggling and armed movements, essentially curtailing the operations of criminal groups within the area.
The CLV triangular cooperation extends beyond economic ties, fostering collaboration in education, training, human resource development, and healthcare. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to regional development and stability.
Recalling the historical context, Hun Sen noted that the inaugural summit of the Cooperation Triangle Development Zone was held in Vientiane, Laos, in 1999, with a subsequent meeting in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 2002. During the second summit, the leaders designated specific provinces for inclusion in the triangular cooperation, which has since yielded substantial economic benefits for Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Further enhancing regional ties, Hun Sen mentioned that Cambodia has provided Laos with salt supplies, while Laos has supplied electricity to Cambodia. He also highlighted the establishment of clear border demarcations between the nations, reinforcing sovereignty and neighborly relations.
Looking ahead, Hun Sen expressed hopes for continued infrastructure enhancements, particularly a new road project in Ratanakiri province that will span 66 kilometers from Banlung to the tail of the dragon, aiming to bolster connectivity and development in the region.
