OHCHR Highlights Bar Association for Successful International Conference on Legal Aid

Phnom Penh: During a working meeting on July 22, 2024, between Mr. Ly Chantola, President of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Ms. Ru Edal Hach, Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cambodia, the OHCHR commended the Bar Association for successfully hosting an international conference on legal aid.

"This conference provided stakeholders with an opportunity to recognize the numerous achievements of the Bar Association in providing legal assistance," said Ms. Hach, according to a release from the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The OHCHR Representative discussed potential cooperation between the two institutions to address prison overcrowding through the provision of legal aid. She invited Mr. Ly Chantola to be a guest speaker at an upcoming conference in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Cambodia.

OHCHR representatives also proposed organizing training sessions and sharing experiences with lawyers, along with providing technical support and international legal documents on human rights.

Mr. Ly Chantola expressed gratitude to the OHCHR Representative for participating as a speaker at the International Conference of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Legal Aid, held last May. He emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation between the two institutions.

Welcoming the initiative to expand collaboration, Mr. Ly Chantola highlighted its significance in providing legal aid, disseminating national and international law, and sharing best practices with Cambodian lawyers. He also informed Ms. Hach about the implementation of the grassroots lawyers project, aimed at educating local leaders across the country on basic laws and the legal profession.
