PM Hun Manet Instructs National Bank of Cambodia to Address Issues with Old and Torn Dollar Bills

Siem Reap, 18 July 2024: Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed the National Bank of Cambodia to work with the private sector to address difficulties related to the use of old or slightly damaged U.S. dollar bills, ensuring that both locals and tourists do not face challenges when spending these notes.

During the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Samdech Preah Brahma Rattanamony Pin Sem Museum at Wat Reachbo in Siem Reap City, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the need for the National Bank to relax certain conditions regarding the circulation of dollar bills that are worn or have minor damage.

"The conditions are sometimes too strict. While it's understandable to reject counterfeit money or severely damaged bills, slight tears or minor stains shouldn't make the bills unusable," he said. "People shouldn't have to waste time going to the bank to exchange slightly damaged bills. It makes it difficult for them and can also inconvenience tourists."

He urged commercial banks and private banks to cooperate with the National Bank to facilitate easier transactions. "It's important that we ensure a good experience for foreign tourists, starting from the moment they land at our airports," the Prime Minister added.

Prime Minister Hun Manet’s instructions aim to improve the hospitality extended to tourists and make everyday transactions smoother for citizens.
