PHNOM PENH, July 15, 2024 — In a significant development for Cambodia’s automotive industry, Liu Xueliang, the Director of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, met with local officials at the Peace Palace to discuss the establishment of an electric vehicle assembly plant in Cambodia.
Established in 1995 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, BYD has emerged as a significant player in the automotive sector, notably producing 3 million vehicles in 2022 alone. The company boasts a global presence with branches in 70 countries, and manufacturing facilities across China, Thailand, India, and Indonesia.
The planned assembly plant in Cambodia is set to bolster the local automotive industry and marks a significant step in the country’s industrial development. The facility will have the capacity to assemble 20,000 vehicles annually, catering not only to the domestic market but also targeting international exports.
This move aligns with Cambodia’s broader industrial strategy to attract foreign investment and technology, particularly in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. The establishment of the BYD assembly plant is expected to create numerous jobs and foster technological expertise locally, further positioning Cambodia as a key player in the ASEAN automotive sector.
