Ministry Registers Nearly 3,000 Electric Vehicles

Phnom Penh, July 11, 2024 – The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has registered a total of 2,968 electric vehicles, marking a significant step towards environmentally friendly transportation in Cambodia.

According to the ministry's spokesperson, Phorn Rim, the registered vehicles include 1,614 cars, 914 motorcycles, and 440 tricycles. Among the various brands, BYD leads the market with 658 registered vehicles, followed by Toyota with 216 and Tesla with 186.

This growing trend not only highlights the cost-saving benefits for Cambodians but also demonstrates an increasing awareness of environmental protection and the reduction of harmful emissions. Electric vehicles offer a cleaner alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, reducing the country's carbon footprint and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

To further support this eco-friendly transportation option, Phorn Rim added that the Royal Government continues to expand infrastructure, particularly charging stations, to accommodate the rising number of electric vehicles. The development of more charging stations is crucial to ensuring that electric vehicle owners have convenient access to necessary facilities, promoting greater adoption of this sustainable mode of transport.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is also working on policies and incentives to encourage more citizens to switch to electric vehicles. These initiatives include tax benefits, subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, and collaborations with private companies to enhance the charging infrastructure.

The rising number of electric vehicles in Cambodia reflects a positive shift in public attitude towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. As more people become aware of the benefits of electric vehicles, both economically and environmentally, the demand for such vehicles is expected to continue growing.
